Around one in five adults either have moved during the pandemic or know someone who did. If you are thinking about relocating, you are not alone! Even a pandemic can’t stop a big move, especially if the move is for a new job, a marriage, or to be with family.
If you are moving during a pandemic, here are three safety tips to help protect your health and the health of your loved ones.
Buy Enough Supplies
The last thing you want to do on the night before your big move is to run to the store to buy more cardboard boxes, tape, or bubble wrap. Make a list of all the items you need and commit yourself to buy a few extra supplies. If you think you need 30 boxes, consider purchasing 10 extra. Likewise, if you think you only need one roll of tape, why not buy another or look for a pack of two? Having extra supplies is always a good idea!
Once you finish your list, try to gather all your items in one trip or on the same day. Going to the store multiple times during your packing period could put you at a higher risk of getting COVID-19. If you are worried about contracting the disease, utilize curbside pickup.
Follow CDC Guidelines
Whether you have hired professional movers or have family or friends that will help, it is important to follow CDC guidelines. This includes wearing masks and staying six feet apart. Don’t feel shy to ask your helpers to frequently wash their hands. It may even be a good idea to buy a large container of hand sanitizer and put it in an open space for everyone to use.
While it is polite to offer food and beverages to helpers, moving during a pandemic makes it a little difficult. Small bottles of water and individually packed snacks are great items to give out. Don’t go overboard, and don’t stress!
Disinfect High-Traffic Areas
Once you arrive in your new home, don’t unpack everything just yet. Clean and sanitize all high-touch surfaces, including but not limited to doorknobs, toilet handles, sink faucets, and light switches.
Thankfully, at Lakewood Apartment Homes, our maintenance team is specially trained to clean and sanitize the apartments according to CDC guidelines. All sanitized apartments are sealed with a sticker on the front door, letting you and our team members know that the space is ready. Your health and well-being are our priority!
If you are moving during a pandemic, don’t fret! Buy enough supplies, practice CDC guidelines during your move, and disinfect your new home to ensure everything is clean and sanitized. Doing these things will help ensure your safety during the move. Happy packing!
